TO STRIP OR NOT TO STRIP

STRIP interviewing known also as Street-Intercept interviewing is a long established, and sometimes unfairly criticised, method for gathering responses from the general public.

Field Force has a team of well-trained and experienced interviewers who regularly frequent street locations conducting often complicated interviews with the general public.

The ideal duration for a strip interview runs to no more than 15 minutes; much longer and the respondent who is often rushing between activities at home, the shops or work will not agree to interview or may terminate part way through.

The prompt material needs to be restricted to A4 cards as the interviewer and respondent are either standing during the interview or at best sitting on a bench.

How does strip interviewing compare with door to door? Door to door as a sample is less than ideal as so many people are either working hours other than M-F and are out on weekends when door to door is usually conducted. The respondents that are at home on weekends worry many researchers as common sense sends a warning that they may not be Mr/Mrs/Ms "average" - do you readily let strangers who knock at your door come into your home on a weekend or at any time for that matter? Strip gives you a chance to catch people who are out and about and approach them in a non-threatening environment. They are generally happy to spare some time as long as the amount of the time is not perceived as "too much".

What about the quotas of male/female, age groups and employment status? If you think that you ever gain a "pure" sample you are kidding yourself with any data collection method. By applying quotas that reflect the population of interest then you will do just as well as if you conducted the interview by any other method.

Are there restrictions to where we can sample? Yes, the number of locations for street interviewing are under local council pressure to be reduced in number so it is important that your Field Force supplier has a good relationship with councils across the metro area. ¨
